Location Tracking

I think that implanting computer chips into children to identify and track them is not a bad idea. This could definitely raise some arguments of whether or not this is ethical, but I would have to say it is not unethical. There could be some health risks with putting a computer chip in a young child but, as long as it has been approved to be safe, I do not think the risks would outweigh the benefits. It is not every day that a child goes missing but it does happen more often than it should. If there was a way to easily track the location of the children, kidnapping would be less of an issue. It should be the parents decision to get the chip implanted in their child, but I do think they should have the option; if this piece of technology proved to be a success. It would also depend if the chip was easy to remove or had to be in their for their entire life. I think this would cause problems because teenagers will not want their parents to be able to track them. Even though they may not like this idea, I think that parents should be mature enough to only use the tracking device in times of emergency. I also think that this would help when people become older. People with Alzheimer's or just forgetfullness in old age can sometimes need to be identified or tracked. As long as people did not use the computer chip for innapropriate situations, I find there to be no ethical issues with it.

  1. I agree with you when you say that these chips chould cause health issues and when dicussing if the chip should later be removed. I know i would not like having a chip implanted in me and knowing that at any one moment in time someone would be able to know exactly where I am without me telling them. Also, If the government made it a law for children to have the tracking ID i would assume that they would be able to at any point in time track any individual. This would raise another red flag with whether or not that is ethical. I would think that it would not be. Those are just some additional things to think about other than that i agree with your argument on the situation!

  2. I agree with you on this. I believe that there are without a doubt risks involved with the location tracking, but I also agree that the benefits of this will certainly outweigh the risks. However, I don't think that people (teenagers, young adults) should have these tracking devices because this is a time in your life when you become independent, develop responsibility skills, and definitely value privacy; all of which would be harmed by a tracking device. Also, you mentioned how parents should be mature enough to only use these tracking devices in the event of an emergency. In theory this is a great idea, but who would be responsible for enforcing that? How would parents be stopped from over-using these devices. I have been fortunate enough to have grown up with parents who did not invade on my privacy but I know a lot of other kids who had over-protective, immature parents when they were younger.
