The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the Internet; Assignment 8

The GOOD: click here for example

Pinterest would be considered a good part of the internet because it is harmless to everyone. Many people, mostly girls, use it to find new creative ideas for house decorating, clothes, or just random activities. It can also be inspirational with quotes or pictures and is just meant for pure pleasure. It is appropriate and there is no reason this website could cause harm to anyone who may stumble across it.

The BAD: click here for example

This website called LetMeWatchThis can be considered a bad view of the internet because it is where you can illegally download movies for free that have not even hit stores yet. Sometimes you can even watch them while they're still in the theaters. This is bad for the movie producers because they are losing money and you could also get in trouble if you were ever caught for illegally watching them. This also goes along with any website many people use to download music for free.

The UGLY: click here for example

This is an example of how the internet can get ugly because it is a website of just people gossiping and saying rude things about celebrities appearances. When people take advantage of being able to post whatever they want without getting in trouble for it because of our freedom of speech amendment it usually gets ugly real quick. They say mean things about celebrities who have no choice but to be on camera 24 hours of the day. No one is perfect, not even celebrities and it is sad that our society has to ridicule everything they do just because they are famous. This is also how cyber bullying came to be. Some people are not mature enough to be allowed on the internet.

Cell Phones and Privacy

When it comes to cell phones, I do think that all of them should be tracked. There is nothing unethical about being able to track a cell phone. The only people that are bothered by it are the ones that are doing something illegal, and that is why it is necessary. Since prepaid phones are not tracked by the government, it is true that criminals take advantage of that. I do not think that they should be banned completely because many people, such as my grandparents, use them for the right reasons. They are a low cost way for those who only use cell phones for emergencies to be able to have one. To avoid criminals being able to use them, I think that it makes sense to have the pre paid phones registered so that the can be tracked. This would not cause any harm to those using the pre paid phones in the right ways.

Location Tracking

I think that implanting computer chips into children to identify and track them is not a bad idea. This could definitely raise some arguments of whether or not this is ethical, but I would have to say it is not unethical. There could be some health risks with putting a computer chip in a young child but, as long as it has been approved to be safe, I do not think the risks would outweigh the benefits. It is not every day that a child goes missing but it does happen more often than it should. If there was a way to easily track the location of the children, kidnapping would be less of an issue. It should be the parents decision to get the chip implanted in their child, but I do think they should have the option; if this piece of technology proved to be a success. It would also depend if the chip was easy to remove or had to be in their for their entire life. I think this would cause problems because teenagers will not want their parents to be able to track them. Even though they may not like this idea, I think that parents should be mature enough to only use the tracking device in times of emergency. I also think that this would help when people become older. People with Alzheimer's or just forgetfullness in old age can sometimes need to be identified or tracked. As long as people did not use the computer chip for innapropriate situations, I find there to be no ethical issues with it.

CS408-01 Assignment 3A

Hi, my name is Emily Romanelli and I am taking a Computer Science class called Living in a Networked World: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. This is a very interesting course that covers information about how technology and the internet can affect society and the future to come. We are making this blog to become more familiar with this type of social networking. I have never had one so this is all new to me. I am interested in learning more about social networking, and how dependent future generations will be on them to socialize. There are many things to come in the technology world, and it is even starting to take over many every day tasks.
